Paddle Pals "River Jive"

Big Water: Large volume turbulent water with boils, big waves, whirlpools, and big holes.

Boil: Water welling up into a mound. Typical of big water.

Bony: Shallow rapids with rocks merely submerged in water.

Cascade: Series of ledges and / or drops.

Chicken route: The easiest route through a more difficult rapid.

Chute: A breakthrough channel or route with fast flowing water through a runnable rapid.

Curl: The breaking part of the wave.

Continuous rapid: A long rapid with only few and small eddies to no eddies at all.

Cushion or pillow: Water pilling up on the upstream side of a rock or rockwall. An absence of a pillow might indicate an undercut rock.

Dam or well: Man made obstruction usually forming a drop and a hole right after it. Treat with extreme caution. Portage Time.

Drop & Pool River: Very common in Ontario. A river with short sections of whitewater usually formed by ledges followed by a quiet pool to recover.

Drop/Waterfall: A vertical fall of water higher than one metre. If the drop is less than a metre the river drop is usually referred to as a ledge drop. Sometimes ledges refer to waterfalls with less than a 90 degree angle.

Eddy: A place in the river where the main current is interrupted due to an obstacle, usually a rock or an outcrop in the shoreline. Eddies are used by canoeist to rest and scout while descending a river. In an eddy there is often little or no current (eddy currents flow the opposite direction in relation to the main current.)

Flatwater: Water with little or no current.

Haystack: High standing waves usually several in sequence created by fast current slowing down and / or elevated by submerged obstructions. They are nice to ride.

Hole/Souse hole: Water going over a submerged obstacle forcing it to reverse it’s flow upstream. There is a love hate relationship between these river monsters and canoeist depending on whether its a play spot or a keeper that will trash you.

Hydraulics: Sometime used to describe a hole but also used for describing big water with large waves, whirlpool and boils which is also called squirrelly or funny water.

Hot Camp Cheese Biscuits
At home mix and place in baggie

* 2 cups flour * 4 tsp. baking powder

* 2 tbsp. sugar * ¾ tsp salt

Camp preparation (add to dry ingredients and stir)

* 1/3 cup oil * ¾ cup milk * 1 cup grated cheese

Form a soft ball of dough.

Knead gently 8-10 times on a floured surface.

Roll ¾ inch thick. Cut with a round edge (mug) or roll.

Bake at 350 degrees (med in your outback oven) until nicely brown.

Fresh Hot Bread with any meal. They're GREAT!

RAIN WIND

When grass is dry at morning light
Look for rain before the night.

A windy autumn is followed by a mild winter.

WINTER

It will be a cold, snowy winter if squirrels accumulate huge stores of nuts.
If autumn leaves are slow to fall, prepare for a cold winter.
If the brown stripe on a Woolly Bear caterpillar is wider than the black stripes, the winter will be long and harsh.

SUNSETS

Sun sets Friday clear as bell,
Rain on Monday sure as hell.

GOOD WEATHER SIGNS

The higher the clouds the better the weather.
If woolly fleeces spread the heavenly way, be sure no rain disturbs the summer day.

BAD WEATHER SIGNS

CLOUDS Dog sleeping through the day.
Arthritic pains in the elderly.
Spiders very active.
Lots of dogberries in the fall means a lot of snow in the winter.
Soot falling to the ground
Chimney smoke descends, our nice weather ends.

If cumulus clouds are smaller at sunset than at noon, expect fair weather.

LIGHTENING

Beware the bolts from north or west,
In south or east the bolts be best.

COLD NIGHTS BIRDS/ANIMALS

When stars shine clear and bright,
We will have a very cold night. When birds or gulls fly high, it is a sign of impending bad weather.
The louder the frog, the more the rain
A cow with its tail to the East makes the weather least; A cow with its tail to the West makes the weather best.

RAINBOWS

Rainbow in the east, sailors at peace;
Rainbow in the west, sailors in distress.
